You need to be carefull with either types of companies, as they make offers and promises they can’t keep.
Keep in mind that most of the things these companies can do, you can easily do yourself. They charge you a great deal of money. All you need to do is educate yourself.
Read the links below for information about credit repair/cred counseling scams. This comes right from the FTC.

um, generally they are the same thing, need a good one try http://www.trinitycredit.org I should know I’m a customer (which is better than a recommendation from the government, someone who actually lives and breathes is telling you this company is GOOD) they are a great bunch of people (always nice as can be when I call them up on the phone) and they don’t make you feel stupid for getting into a financial jam. But honestly DO be careful which type of company you go with, a LOT of them rip you off and screw you over more than the situation you’re already in, I’ve heard a LOT of people tell me about their personal experience with bad credit councelling/debt management companies. And personally We’ve done so well with our that we’ve only been customers for 2 and a half years (and were put on a 6 yr program) and we SHOULD have our debt paid off this August! Go US!!!

I would strongly recommend avoiding both. Often times, these places want you to agree for them to make your payments so that they can purposely get you behind so that they can try to settle the debt. This is a very bad idea.
Both will show up on your credit report negatively.
Instead, consider looking into a book called ‘Total Money Makeover’ by Dave Ramsey. He also offers a 13 week course on personal finance in many areas. Checkout http://www.daveramsey.com.
